The Basics

Character Name: Augustus Rookwood
PB: Geoffrey Rush

Age: 52
Birthday: January 10, 1949
Wand: 12.5” Dragon Heartstring Ash - pliable
House in School: Slytherin
Bloodline: Pureblood

Political View:
Pureblood Supremacist. The wizarding world should be run by those who are not tainted by the foul animal blood of Muggles. That they are anything other than servants or simply graves is something only goes to prove how upside down and inverted the world really is. He feels an overwhelming drive to correct this fallacy of justice and right, converting to his view as many as possible and destroying any opposition he can.
Appearance

Height: 6’2” though he stoops some, so he stands only 6 feet tall
Weight: 200 lbs
Eyes: Dark brown with green accents
Hair: Curly, mostly unruly brown hair that falls just past his collar
Build: a little more broad than average
Dress Style:
Augustus tends towards simple, practical black robes, though he does own brown as well.
Having spent most of his adult life either in the Department of Mysteries or in Azkaban, he’s never tended towards what he considers the more extravagant of tastes. His clothes are always of reasonable quality, and while his everyday clothes border on plain and unassuming, they are nothing to be ashamed of, even in the company of such a man as Lucius Malfoy. He does have some more formal attire, however, for when circumstances demand such.

Basic Physical Description:

Defining Marks:
Augustus is pockmarked from a bout of Dragon Pox as a young man. While he survived the illness, the scars on his face aren't the only ones he bears from it. The remainder of his body, however, is always covered. His shoulders are stooped from years of bending over his research, giving his tall frame the illusion of being just slightly shorter.
Personality

Augustus is at his core, a sadist, though he takes his pleasures out in far different ways than his colleague and comrade in arms, Bellatrix Lestrange. He prefers to destroy perceptions, creating illusions and realities of his own design. His abilities to do this have created in him an overwhelming fear that the same could be done to him, and have thus made him very paranoid. His home is his sanctuary, and none set foot there. Period.

He can be suave, and tends towards melodic speaking, whispering hatred and violence as if they were lover’s words. Though more often than not, he reserves the most gentle speech for the victims of his more violent crimes. He doesn’t tend to cause magical physical harm, but has no qualms about emotional or mental harm with such. Yet, he still prefers his victims to be completely aware of their fate. To this end, he avoids the Cruciatus Curse on principle.

Now, of course, he can’t do magical harm, being bound by the device as he is, but he wears it with pride, calling it penitence. He wears it on his left wrist, where he claims it is to remind him never to let anyone control him in such a fashion again. He says there, it reminds him of all the mistakes in his life. This is, of course, true, but not the truth he claims. He considers getting caught and having to bend his back to these Mudbloods and filth is the mistake. He sometimes wishes he had died in the war, a glorious martyr death worthy of a warrior. That he didn’t is the failure to him.

Augustus would never admit to such a feeling, but deep inside, he has doubts as to whether he could ever belong in the world such as it is. He despises the Ministry and everything he sees it to stand for. He has lost his network, and knows better than to attempt to recreate it or see if any of the contacts would still speak to him yet, and he's lost his job. He wants to change things, but he's never been an idealist. With the head gone, he doesn't believe the Death Eaters will manage to be anything but a few stragglers. He wants to believe otherwise, and he would only show support to the cause, but he has his doubts. Too many egos involved. Too many people wanting glory.
Psychology

Extrovert/Introvert:
He’s an introvert of epic proportions. While he has no problems handling people one on one, once the group grows beyond perhaps seven, he withdraws. He’s quite happy there, simply watching. He's much happier there, in fact, than in the center of everyone's attention. He leaves that for when he can hide behind parchment and quill.

He never invites people to his home, instead keeping it a proper sanctuary to which he can retreat at will. He has a need for solitude perhaps outweighing his desire for networking occasionally, especially after large parties.

During his Death Eater days, Augustus was able to be more sociable, though never as outgoing as Lucius or Bellatrix assuredly. The mask was a protection on various levels and that distance aided him well.

Boggart Would Be:
Augustus’ boggart is a veela. The presence, and worse, the song of a veela can force a man to lose control, to do as she bids. Loss of control, especially to a woman scares him beyond measure as he values his own senses and being in control of them above all else. He keeps a tight rein on his passions, allowing them freedom only when and how he decides. That someone else could do to him what he does to others is a reality he does not wish to nor in fact is able to sanely explore.

Patronus Would Be:
Augustus has never been able to cast a patronus, though he has managed a silver mist on occasion. He much prefers to not need one and to be the cause of fear.

Sexuality

Augustus is bisexual by orientation, but fairly asexual by practice. He finds beauty in all places and has no problems with casual relationships with either sex. However, he tends to care for himself far more than anyone else.

When it does come to the act itself, however, Augustus’ tastes run the complete gamut of the activity spectrum. While he can find enjoyment in tenderness, his normal tastes run to various levels of depravity.
Lifestyle

Occupation: He’s just taken a job as a journalist/columnist for the Daily Prophet under the pen name Adair Rhys.
Residence: Augustus has returned to his former home, a small house in Camden. The small front garden is ill-tended and perpetually overgrown. The exterior is brown brick.
Financial Status:Moderately well-off. He does have the funds back from his vault, but his family was never truly rich. However, he does live comfortably well between the interest off his investments and his new “career.”
Family

Parents: Claudia and Marcus Rookwood – Both Deceased.
Siblings: None

His parents are dead, and there are no living relatives close enough to him in blood to bother with.
History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time

Augustus attended Hogwarts three years ahead of Bellatrix Black and five ahead of Lucius Malfoy. Having been too young to be among the original Death Eaters, he was recruited after having been accepted as an Unspeakable.

Most of his adulthood was spent creating a network within as well as without the Ministry, along with working in the Department of Mysteries.

He participated as a spy for Voldemort throughout the first war, only betrayed by Igor Karkaroff in 1981 during the latter’s trial. The exposure resulted in Augustus being sent to Azkaban until January 1996 when he broke out with the other Death Eaters. His cover having been blown, he hid out with the others, working hard towards Voldemort’s return to power. He participated in the battle at the Department of Mysteries, and was subsequently recaptured and sent to Azkaban a second time.

As the war raged on, Augustus took advantage of the security breaches that occurred at Azkaban, making his escape. He began private raids on Muggles and especially witches and wizards who had married Muggles. Having been caught in the thick of things, he decided to go out on his own, working towards the Dark Lord's ends. He had approached the Dark Lord, and offered to use his own talents to destroy hope and security in the traitors. Whether he was granted permission as a proper boon or to simply keep him out of the way, Augustus rather didn't care. He accepted the opportunity happily, occasionally working with other Death Eaters, though mostly alone. His last raid went awry, and he was Stunned. Immediately finding himself in the presence of perhaps six Aurors and no wand, he feigned confusion and began to mumble to himself. This ruse did not keep him from another sentence in Azkaban where he remained throughout the rest of the war.

Augustus has only recently returned from Azkaban after successfully petitioning the courts that he was under an Imperius Curse. As none of the curses that have been traced to his wand during the wand checks can associated with the timeframes necessary to prove he ever cast them at another human being, he cannot be labeled as having committed a violent crime. As part of his defense, he offered a memory to be put in the pensieve and studied for alterations. It cemented his release as he only cast stunning and other non-violent hexes at the children. That he did it because he would have much preferred their screams at his own hands and ministrations was never offered, nor suspected.

He willingly took the device as a sign of his penitence, and wears it openly, though he did beg one boon of the Ministry. They granted him permission to use a pen name as he recreated his life for the purposes of being a correspondent journalist for the Daily Prophet so long as he kept his own initials. He accepted that concession happily, expressing his understanding at why he would not be allowed to return to his job at the Department of Mysteries no matter how much it pained him. Since then, he has begun sending articles to the Daily Prophet via owl and receiving his payment by same.

He despises Harry Potter and all that he stands for. He thinks it fool's luck that he beat the Dark Lord. Dumbledore's murder has made him more willing to believe Severus' loyalties, though he would not trust him to watch his back. Lucius' pardon made him laugh a full day when he'd sat and read the book. Lucius always did find a way to land on his feet. That Snape and Lupin are again professors is simply proof the world is upside down. The Registry is a farce and needs to be taken in hand. They obviously want to classify people. They simply need to see they're classifying the wrong people. Bellatrix's insanity plea and resultant release was pure genius. The move made him very happy to have once been one of the elite with her.
